This project aims to support the implementation of the EU Energy System Integration Strategy and identify new measures to address remaining barriers to energy system integration in the European Union (Part I). Furthermore, the assignment supports Member States in implementing specific energy system integration provisions of the upcoming revised RED II and related legislation (Part II).

The project fulfils the following specific objectives:

– Task 1: Identify remaining challenges and barriers for successful energy system integration in the current policy context and the changes in the energy system.
Task 2: Provide recommendations to further promote energy system integration in the EU, addressing barriers affecting both the action areas of the ESI Strategy and the selected aspects of end-use electrification, uptake of hydrogen, and utilisation of waste heat.
– Task 3: Provide guidance to support Member States in the implementation of the provisions in the revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) regarding system integration.
