Biodiversity is essential for the functioning of ecosystems which we all depend on for our continued well-being. Despite this, habitat loss, diffuse pollution, exploitation of resources and climate change continue to erode ecosystems globally. As a result of these pressures, the EU adopted a Biodiversity Strategy in 2011 which seeks to protect, value and appropriately restore biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. 8 years have passed since the adoption of the Strategy, and with the deadline of targets set for 2020 rapidly approaching, it is imperative to take stock and analyse the root causes of failures to reach these targets.
Trinomics will support the European Commission in this evaluation, along with IEEP, IUCN, UNEP-WCMC, ENT and Denkstatt.
