Trinomics, as lead partner, in collaboration with Milieu Ltd, has been awarded a study contract by the European Parliament’s STOA Panel to carry out an assessment on technology options for deep seabed exploitation. The objective of the assignment is to identify challenges and opportunities of deep-sea resource exploration and exploitation to the European Union (EU) based on their technical-economic feasibility, environmental impact and legal framework complexity. The aim is to map deep-sea exploration technologies available and assess its technical, legal and environmental impacts, in the context of the existing knowledge of the deep seabed. On the basis of this information, a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) will be developed for those activities aimed at exploiting deep-sea minerals and raw materials as well as assessing the potentials for biomedical, biochemical and pharmaceutical research and applications.
