How well is EU policy tackling biodiversity loss?

This project will evaluate the progress made by the EU and its Member States towards meeting biodiversity targets. In essence, this involves analysing the strategic approaches and actions undertaken to tackle biodiversity loss. This will be achieved through assessing 5 main themes of analysis: whether the Biodiversity Strategy is contributing to the aims it established; the cost-effectiveness of achieving such aims; the coherence of the Strategy with wider EU policy; the alignment of the Strategy with societal needs; and, the added value of the Strategy compared to national actions. As such, the evaluation will paint an overall picture of the fitness of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020.

The project is conducted by Trinomics (lead) in collaboration with IUCN, UN-WCMC, IEEP, ENT and Denkstatt. The project will run from June 2019 and will finish by November 2020.

The key objectives of the project are:

  • Ascertain the significant achievements of the strategy and the success factors
  • Understand the main sources of failure to achieve targets
  • Uncover the key areas and sectors that are related to biodiversity loss
