How do Member State climate ambitions contribute to the EU 2050 objectives?

The Energy and Climate Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 requires the European Commission (EC) to assess whether the national long-term strategies are adequate for the collective achievement of the objectives and targets of the Energy Union and the long-term Union greenhouse gas (GHG) commitments consistent with the Paris Agreement. It also requires the European Commission to provide information on any remaining collective gap. This project supports the European Commission in the assessment of Member States’ long-term strategies (LTS), and in the assessment of the collective achievement associated with the Strategies.

The project is conducted by Trinomics in collaboration with Ricardo Energy & Environment(lead), Oeko Institute, VITO and the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP). The project will run from December 2019 and will finish by September 2020.

This investigation provided the following preliminary results:

  • Review the national long-term strategies and prepare assessment fiches which report on their contents, for each of the individual EU Member States;
  • Extract the quantitative information reported in the strategies.
